Gallery 1855 at the Davis Cemetery Presents:

February 2012: Henry Paine

"They said, You have a blue guitar/ You do not play things as they are/ The man replied, Things as they are/ Are changed upon the blue guitar."

~ from The Man With The Blue Guitar by poet Wallace Stevens

The fine art photographer has the unique ability to study something through the metaphoric lens and, with that lens, to make definitive pictorial statements. Henry Paine's thirty year study of the Huntington Gardens in San Marino is a photographic verification of Wallace Steven's astute observation, "Reality is not what it is. It consists of the many realities which it can be made into." Each year Paine journeyed south to Huntington he brought a different view and, as a result, experienced a different vision. During the month of February you can share three decades of his visions on display at Gallery 1855 in his black and white images, "Succulents of the Huntington Botanical Gardens."

While influenced greatly by Edward and Brett Weston, as well as Ansel Adams, Paine credits the inspiration for this series to "Don Worth's stunning images of succulents and other plants," first seen by Paine in 1973, "which especially blew my mind with their beauty." Whether or not you know and love succulents, Paine's study of them will bear out Alfred Stieglitz's insight, "In photography there is a reality so subtle that it becomes more real than reality."

You are warmly invited to meet Henry Paine and immerse yourself in his amazing images of succulents at a free reception on Sunday, February 12, 2012 from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. at Gallery 1855 in the office of the Davis Cemetery District, 820 Pole Line Road, Davis, or to view the work Monday through Friday between 9 AM and 3 PM during the month of February.
